[Book Review] Cosmos by Carl Sagan

What is this book about?

Book explores the mutual development of science and civilization. It tries to answer what does Cosmos mean to humans? and what do humans mean for Cosmos?

Author broadly discusses history of science leading to today, our current understanding of the cosmos, possibility of life elsewhere in the universe and how does future look for the mankind.

Writing Style:

Whenever author discusses a subject, he also dwells into all the associated areas and gives a comprehensive picture. For example, to make clear the fact that life which evolves elsewhere could be radically different from us he goes into concepts of evolution of mankind and discusses the possibility for an alternate evolutionary path. While discussing future of life on earth, author discusses current global security equation, human psychology and history along with science. This book is heavy on science with pleasant doses of history, biology and other disciplines.

What to expect while reading?

Reading could demand concentration at times as author mentions many scientific details when discussing a concept. It also needs us to be imaginative especially during the chapters discussing efforts to reach Mars and Venus, life cycle of stars and some other concepts related to Celestial objects. But once we follow what author is saying, reading this will be amazing ride.

Every concept author presents is discussed in a very engaging way. Author never deviates and always relies on science to convey his point. As a result, reading this will sometimes bring recollection of many concepts of science that we once read and more often will introduce many more wonderful concepts to you. Concepts are neither too complex nor too simple. Hence making it an interesting and educating read. Chapters discussing possible boundaries of the universe and future of life on earth are my favorites.

I will remember Cosmos as the book that has taught me how beautiful science actually is.

If you have ever looked into infinity of sky at night enjoying beauty of stars and wondering what it all means, you are sure to enjoy Cosmos :)

[Short Story] The Regret

It was 5pm in the evening. Prithvi made the big decision and started his journey downwards from the 50th floor of the bank building which is his workplace.          He has been working at a huge commercial bank for 25 years. He started as an Assistant Manager and rose to the level of Vice President of the bank for the entire region of South India. Till 2 months before today, anyone would have agreed that he had a very successful career. But all that changed in a single day.          A financial fraud of never seen proportions was exposed a couple of months earlier. Entire banking system was taken for a ride by a trader, who was highly intelligent and crooked. Many people who had been working with him and had no idea what he was up to were shell shocked when the scam was revealed. Prithvi was one of them. Though the investigation revealed that he was innocent, he had a bigger problem to fac...

[Opinion] Which one is better, Idealism or Realism?

Idealism is when you envision or see things in an ideal or perfect manner. Realism, on the other hand, tends toward a more pragmatic and actual view of a situation. These two approaches are familiar to most of the us even though we are not familiar with the formal definitions of them. So which one among these is better?           We are familiar with benefits of a positive mindset. Idealism helps greatly in having a positive mindset. A person with a positive mindset will be more hopeful, motivated and at peace with his situation. Believing things like good ultimately wins over evil, every act in life has a purpose etc can help in having peaceful mind. Believing that efforts will be rewarded will keep us motivated in our work. If we can believe all people are good, then we will have no need to judge, suspect or doubt anyone's intentions. If there is a super-natural power, it will take care of all the evil and we need not worry about it. It is ...

[Opinion] Nationalism in current times

India is having extraordinary Olympics at Tokyo. Whole country is celebrating the success of our players which is good to see. It is definitely a happy, proud and inspiring moment for all the citizens. I remember how I was inspired after watching story of Milkha Singh in his biopic. In fact, it still inspires me every time I watch. Please don't ask me what I have done with all that inspiration though! Our Olympics performance might hopefully change the attitude towards sport in our country. Maybe from now children who show interest in sports rather than education (read engineering and medicine) and will not be criticized or mocked for doing so . Out pour of national jubilation over winning of Gold Medal in Javelin Throw made me think about nationalism, what it means and its possible downsides. Note : Winning a medal in Olympic track and field after 120 years, which is also the first ever Gold for India in Olympic track and field is an extraordinary feat, one surely worthy of celebr...
