[Book Review] Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru

What is this book about?

This book is about history of India starting from ancient times till 1940s. Though it is a broad subject, Nehru does a good job at it not missing any major beats of history overall. Till the time before British rule starts it majorly takes historical perspective but when talking of British rule, tone of the book is historical and also political rather than being only historical probably because the author is so deeply involved in the politics of the time.

What are the positives?

Nehru is very well informed of broad range of subjects such as art, history, politics, economics. So most of the times he is able to give comprehensive picture of many historical events. His approach is one of rational and objective observer.
He adds personal touch most of the times while explaining which makes it more interesting. His writing style has touch of poetry and reveals the romantic that Nehru is.
This book is a good source to learn Indian history and major events of world history.

What's wrong with this book?

-> It doesn't present any new historical perspective. It rather talks about the ones that already exist and does good job at it.
-> Writing style is poor in some places making comprehension difficult.
-> Explanation at places is too subjective that it deviates from objectivity and also becoming  abstract at places

Overall verdict:

For people interested in history and do not mind  length of the book, it's a good read. It's an amazing chance to peek into the mind of our first Prime Minister whose vision determined the direction which development of our nation took. For people who like Nehru this one is a must read.

[Short Story] The Regret

It was 5pm in the evening. Prithvi made the big decision and started his journey downwards from the 50th floor of the bank building which is his workplace.          He has been working at a huge commercial bank for 25 years. He started as an Assistant Manager and rose to the level of Vice President of the bank for the entire region of South India. Till 2 months before today, anyone would have agreed that he had a very successful career. But all that changed in a single day.          A financial fraud of never seen proportions was exposed a couple of months earlier. Entire banking system was taken for a ride by a trader, who was highly intelligent and crooked. Many people who had been working with him and had no idea what he was up to were shell shocked when the scam was revealed. Prithvi was one of them. Though the investigation revealed that he was innocent, he had a bigger problem to fac...

[Opinion] Which one is better, Idealism or Realism?

Idealism is when you envision or see things in an ideal or perfect manner. Realism, on the other hand, tends toward a more pragmatic and actual view of a situation. These two approaches are familiar to most of the us even though we are not familiar with the formal definitions of them. So which one among these is better?           We are familiar with benefits of a positive mindset. Idealism helps greatly in having a positive mindset. A person with a positive mindset will be more hopeful, motivated and at peace with his situation. Believing things like good ultimately wins over evil, every act in life has a purpose etc can help in having peaceful mind. Believing that efforts will be rewarded will keep us motivated in our work. If we can believe all people are good, then we will have no need to judge, suspect or doubt anyone's intentions. If there is a super-natural power, it will take care of all the evil and we need not worry about it. It is ...

[Opinion] Nationalism in current times

India is having extraordinary Olympics at Tokyo. Whole country is celebrating the success of our players which is good to see. It is definitely a happy, proud and inspiring moment for all the citizens. I remember how I was inspired after watching story of Milkha Singh in his biopic. In fact, it still inspires me every time I watch. Please don't ask me what I have done with all that inspiration though! Our Olympics performance might hopefully change the attitude towards sport in our country. Maybe from now children who show interest in sports rather than education (read engineering and medicine) and will not be criticized or mocked for doing so . Out pour of national jubilation over winning of Gold Medal in Javelin Throw made me think about nationalism, what it means and its possible downsides. Note : Winning a medal in Olympic track and field after 120 years, which is also the first ever Gold for India in Olympic track and field is an extraordinary feat, one surely worthy of celebr...
