[Book Review] Vimuktha by Volga

"Dharma parirakshakulu yadha stithi vadulu, nyayam kosam porade valladi pragathi sheela tirugubatu"
(Those whose seek to protect dharma are status quoists, people who fight for justice are progressive rebels)
This is a line from the preface of this book. This line describes the book perfectly. Mythology has perpetrated severe injustice over Dalits and women in the name of dharma and karma. In the light of modern values, it is necessary to revisit these and draw necessary lessons. That's what the author does in this book. She fights with the conventional narration which is unfair and presents instead a narrative that is just.

What's the book is about:

It's a collection of short stories. Plot of each story is fictionalized version of female characters in Ramayana. Author tackles the deep rooted patriarchy and gender bias in our epics that is generally shown as acceptable under some disguise of purity, duty or karma.

How are the stories?

In each of the story Sita meets one of the female characters like Shoorpanaka who got her nose cut which is case of disproportionate punishment or Ahalya who was turned to stone while Indra, the real perpetrator goes scot-free and Renuka, who is attacked by her own son Parushurama on word of his father. Each one provides their narrative about the incidents. They are shown to react to their  incidents not softly and weakly as women are usually shown but boldly and strongly, and it has transformational effect on them. They develop much better understanding of life, greater sense of maturity and more respect for themselves. They analyze gender roles and power equations as they existed during those times and call out the patriarchy that is deeply rooted in the celebrated epic.

Sita, thanks to these interactions, is shown to deal with her own problems in a much better way than in conventional story line.

Positives:

-> Writing style is very good. In short length of the stories, author manages to make her point and does it beautifully.
-> It talks about stories you already know
and pushes you to think in new dimensions
-> Characters are well designed. They oppose patriarchy, reject biased gender roles and conduct themselves with independence, dignity and intelligence in a way that can inspire people of today's world
-> Value system that author bases her story on is one of equality, dignity and justice instead of
patriarchial, deterministic, and inequal one as seen in the classical narration

Conclusion:

For people interested in gender equality, this one is a must read. It inspires us to question orthodoxy, patriarchy and enables us to examine the contemporary gender roles and power structures with a better wisdom.

  1. Hope justice prevails amidst the chaos created by ignorance and their fear of liberal thought creeping into people's thoughts. Their very reason of suppression of thought unearths the underlying fear of shallowness of their arguments and denial of critical evaluation.

[Short Story] The Regret

It was 5pm in the evening. Prithvi made the big decision and started his journey downwards from the 50th floor of the bank building which is his workplace.          He has been working at a huge commercial bank for 25 years. He started as an Assistant Manager and rose to the level of Vice President of the bank for the entire region of South India. Till 2 months before today, anyone would have agreed that he had a very successful career. But all that changed in a single day.          A financial fraud of never seen proportions was exposed a couple of months earlier. Entire banking system was taken for a ride by a trader, who was highly intelligent and crooked. Many people who had been working with him and had no idea what he was up to were shell shocked when the scam was revealed. Prithvi was one of them. Though the investigation revealed that he was innocent, he had a bigger problem to fac...

[Opinion] Which one is better, Idealism or Realism?

Idealism is when you envision or see things in an ideal or perfect manner. Realism, on the other hand, tends toward a more pragmatic and actual view of a situation. These two approaches are familiar to most of the us even though we are not familiar with the formal definitions of them. So which one among these is better?           We are familiar with benefits of a positive mindset. Idealism helps greatly in having a positive mindset. A person with a positive mindset will be more hopeful, motivated and at peace with his situation. Believing things like good ultimately wins over evil, every act in life has a purpose etc can help in having peaceful mind. Believing that efforts will be rewarded will keep us motivated in our work. If we can believe all people are good, then we will have no need to judge, suspect or doubt anyone's intentions. If there is a super-natural power, it will take care of all the evil and we need not worry about it. It is ...

[Opinion] Nationalism in current times

India is having extraordinary Olympics at Tokyo. Whole country is celebrating the success of our players which is good to see. It is definitely a happy, proud and inspiring moment for all the citizens. I remember how I was inspired after watching story of Milkha Singh in his biopic. In fact, it still inspires me every time I watch. Please don't ask me what I have done with all that inspiration though! Our Olympics performance might hopefully change the attitude towards sport in our country. Maybe from now children who show interest in sports rather than education (read engineering and medicine) and will not be criticized or mocked for doing so . Out pour of national jubilation over winning of Gold Medal in Javelin Throw made me think about nationalism, what it means and its possible downsides. Note : Winning a medal in Olympic track and field after 120 years, which is also the first ever Gold for India in Olympic track and field is an extraordinary feat, one surely worthy of celebr...
